” When diet is wrong, medicine is of no use.
When diet is correct, medicine is of no need. “

Diet does not only mean what to eat. It means a lot more. According to ayurveda, Food is considered one among the three pillars of life and thus emphasizes proper dietary habits. Diet is actually about what you eat, how much you eat and most importantly how you eat.

Good nutrition is eating the right kind of food, with the right beverage, eating the right amount of food, at the right time, with the right company, in the right place, and in the right frame of mind.

Eating right is an ART which when practiced can make you the ruler of your health and well being. Here are some handpicked tips on the quality, quantity and method of eating that will help you making the right diet.

What you eat…………..

Food is not only a mixture of proteins, carbohydrate, fats, vitamin etc., but it is something, which satisfies the mind and soul also. Diet should be regulated taking into account the ‘Desha'(territory), ‘Kala’ (Season as well as time of the day) and ‘satmya’( accustomed) ,etc. the food you chose should be suitable to your body constitution. Food should be full of nutrients having an ideal mixture of all the six tastes (sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter and astringent). Always go with the seasonal fruits and vegetables and those which are grown in your region. Avoid incompatible foods. Last but not the least, Food should also be delicious and pleasing to the senses and should be prepared by a happy cook.

How much you eat………….

One should eat in proper quantity. The quantity of food to be taken, again, depends upon the power of digestion. The amount of food which, without disturbing the equilibrium of the body and gets digested as well as metabolized in proper time, is to be regarded as the proper quantity. The proper quantity of food does depend upon the nature of food articles. If the food article is heavy, only three fourth or half of the stomach capacity is to be filled up. Even in the case of light, excessive intake is not conducive to the maintenance of the power of digestion and metabolism. Do not over or under eat. Eat to about ¾ capacity, i.e. two cupped handfuls.

Taken in appropriate quantity, food certainly helps the individual in bringing about strength, complexion, happiness and longevity without disturbing the equilibrium of the body.

How you eat………..

  • Eat according to your hunger level. Avoid eating when not hungry, and do not delay or skip meals.
  • Eat at approximately the same time every day.
  • Chew your food thoroughly, and eat at a moderate pace. Remember that digestion begins in the mouth, and that the stomach has no teeth.
  • Wait until the previous meal is digested before eating again. This usually occurs within 3-6 hours.
  • Eat in a settled, quiet atmosphere. Avoid distractions such as reading, T.V., or driving. Allow your mind and body to focus on the process of enjoying the flavors, textures, and aromas of your food.
  • Sip warm or room temperature liquids during meals. More or less depending upon the dryness of the food.
  • Don’t drink lot of water immediately after food .
  • Take a short walk ten minutes after a meal. The traditional recommendation is at least 100 steps.
